The French secret services said the al-Qaeda leader is dead.
Even if bin Laden was gone, his fighting spirit and his extreme doctrines would live on among jihadists. After all, they are not fighting for the cause of bin Laden, they're fight for the cause of Allah and Sharia.
The US and the world would have a hard time coping with the dire consequences of the war in Iraq. I know Islamic radicalism didn't begin in March 2003. Yet Iraq is a magnet to jihadists and the invasion of Iraq has galvanized many an alienated Muslim youth into action. That seems to be confirmed recently by the intelligence community in the US itself.

I say give them cable or satellite, coca cola, levi's hopefully then things will turn better.
I believe materialism is much better than religious radicalism.
I also believe firmly that materialism will triumph over Islamic radicalism. Look what happen to Chinese Communism today.
Religious people may disagree, though.
Muslims in Tsim Sha Tsui won't make any trouble, so I think Robert's idea is work. But remember in July 2005 or 2006 London attracks, they are British born and educated Muslims. So I think give them PC and internet, Yahoo auction, e-Bay and Blogger will spend much of their efforts
Religious folks can be an arrogant bunch. They pray for us, sorry for us, because they thought they are all set.
I am not so sure. On a personal level I guess if it works for you, go ahead believe in whatever turns you on. Just don't kill me.
Why Muslim youths become militants and why they kill? This is kinda complicated. Harvard scholar Jessica Stern has written a book, Terror in the Name of God: Why Religious Militants Kill, trying to figure out the answer.
IMHO, they are mostly impoverished, disenchanted young people, i.e. the have-nots in their own countries. These countries are usually undemocratic or a basket case. These youths blame their plight on US hegemony and US siding with the Jews.
I refuse to intellectualize the whole thing. I mean fuck it, if I have cable TV, I don't need a higher calling.
Your opinion sounds good enough to me, for now Jessica would be an overkill for me.
